Edberg shares why younger players do not break Federer, Nadal dominance
The six-time Major winner Stefan Edberg praised the Big Three dominance. In an interview to Sports Wallah, the former world No. 1, who coached Roger Federer in 2014 and 2015, said: "It’s quite incredible what has happened over the last 10-12 years. Basically, you’ve had like you said, 4 players, winning nearly every Grand Slam, winning every Masters series. They have been dominating the game for so long now. And they are still dominating the game. Rafa (Nadal) and Roger winning all the four Slams last year and Roger winning this year’s Australian Open, you have to wonder how long can it go on? I’m surprised in a little way that they are still dominating because these guys are getting older. It’s also good though, as the longer they can go on, it’s good for the game. But one day it is going to change as they are going to retire and people are going to miss them."
On why the next generation failed to break the dominance set by Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Federer, Edberg added: "That’s a very good question. I’m not sure I have the answer. But it is what I think I would call a ‘Golden Generation’. These players are extraordinary! Maybe, they have some advantages in getting the best practice courts, choosing the tournaments they want to play. But overall I think they are just extraordinary players. Looking at tennis five years from now, there is going to be a lot of diversity, a lot more players winning Grand Slams. That’s more likely, I believe."
