I had relief and happiness in 2009 French Open win, says Roger Federer
In an interview to RTS, Roger Federer recalled his 2009 French Open title. The Swiss defeated Robin Soderling in a straight-set final to achieve the Career Grand Slam. Federer had lost all the three finals played against Rafael Nadal. "Everyone knows, especially in France, how much I have tried winning the French Open. And I finally achieved it. I could have ended my career there. It's true there was some relief but even more happiness, so much satisfaction," said Federer in an interview to RTS.
The Basel native also recalled his beginnings in tennis. In particular, he picked one moment: his first appearance at the 1999 Rotterdam Open as a 17-year-old. "I think I got a wild card maybe, I don't know if I needed it at the end, but it was granted by the tournament which was great. It was an unbelievable year for me, made quarter-finals, made a big jump, earned a lot of points. It was one of my breakthroughs back in 1999."
In 2019, Federer will play the clay season for the first time in two years. He had last played on clay in 2016 but skipped playing on the red dirt in 2017 and 2018. Federer will play the Mutua Madrid Open and the French Open. He will be making his first appearance at Roland Garros in three years after having skipped from 2016 (because of his knee injury) unto 2018.
