Jaume Munar earns Madrid Open wild card to join Nadal, Djokovic and Federer

The 21-year-old Spaniard Jaume Munar has been on the constant rise in the last couple of seasons, standing just inside the top-300 at the beginning of 2017 and gaining more than 200 places on the list throughout two years. Jaume claimed the first Challenger title at home in Segovia in 2017, adding two more last June in Prostejov and Caltanissetta to crack the top-100 and continue his charge. Munar scored ten ATP wins in 2018, qualifying for the main draw at Roland Garros to oust David Ferrer in a marathon and battle hard against Novak Djokovic as well to get an even bigger boost of confidence.

Capable of delivering some good tennis on hard courts as well, Jaume notched a win at the US Open and closed the year at the NextGen Masters, battling against the other most prominent youngsters in the world. The Spaniard has been on a roll so far in 2019, reaching five quarter-finals on the Tour and defeating world no. 3 Alexander Zverev in Marrakech for a career-best win and impressive 12 triumphs so far this year, entering the season with 11 overall! Just a day after that great win over Zverev, Munar has received the wild card for the home Madrid Open, losing in the qualifying round in the previous three seasons and having a chance to make the main draw debut in front of the home crowd.

"I want to thank Madrid Open organizers for the wild card they gave me. I want to express my gratitude towards Feliciano Lopez and Manolo Santana for the opportunity they offered me. For me, it is essential to get a chance of participating in such a big tournament and in front of the home crowd. I feel very happy and excited to compete in Madrid, convinced it would be a fantastic week for me and everyone who likes tennis."
