Novak Djokovic, not Roger Federer, will end year as world No. 1 - Rusedski
The former world No. 4 Greg Rusedski believes that Novak Djokovic and not Roger Federer will end the year as a world No. 1. The Swiss leads the ATP Race rankings, but he is set to have a relatively light schedule despite he comes back to compete on clay for the first time since 2016. “I would still go with Novak Djokovic over the last year, his consistency and winning the Australian Open. If you were doing it today then yes, but you have to look at the whole calendar. Basically the last few weeks he’s been the best player on the planet, but we don’t define them on three weeks. We define them on the calendar and their whole career", said Rusedski on Amazon Prime.
He also gave a thought on the Miami Open final prize ceremony: “What I found so amusing was the speeches at the end. When John Isner said ‘You make us all look so pathetic, I want you to play forever’. But I’m sure there are a lot of players who are like ‘Roger Federer, please retire, we want to win something’.”
“I don’t think it’s any doubt as long as he stays healthy. I don’t think it’s in any doubt. I’m looking at him this year and it looks like there’s relaxation. [The match vs Isner] was a big test and he was so good in the finals for a set and a half. If he stays healthy he gets past 109.”
