Rafael Nadal shares knowledge and experience in Mexico - Coach
In an interview to Marca, one of the Rafa Nadal Academy coaches, Jose Figueras, commented on the mentality they have in starting a new tennis centre in Cancun, Mexico. "Rafael Nadal shares his knowledge and experience here", said Figueras. "The Rafael Nadal method is about the mental skills, and from there everything else comes. Rafa tells us, for example, to teach a certain style to players. There is a lot of competition involved with very quick matches, us coaches are with the ones who lose so that the player can go through all the kind of situations. When we started in Manacor, despite Rafa was an important name, we struggled to start. Now it's different. The sport always needs to be amateur, and then the professionalism comes to you. We are not like, I do it to be a professional", said Figueras adding that, through the Nadal Academy, you can go to the United States and keep training and getting a degree. "If you have chances to have a professional career, you are just 22 years old and you have time to make a career."
Figueras added: "I would be pleased with the project if all the people involved, whatever level they have, manage to live a different experience. That they leave happy or that they come back. If they come back here or in Manacor, it means we did a good job."
Nadal commented on his new tennis center in Mexico. The Spaniard decided to co-operate with the investor Abel Matutes. "For me being helped by serious people was the key, leading on it and knowing that you can trust them", said the world No. 2. "Our relationship with the Matutes family was a guarantee on this aspect. We are from the same place and we have been having a personal relationship for years. This opportunity came when the project was in full building, and we want to grow. Our goal was to establish that was done in Mallorca: once that's controlled, knowing that it's a daily job and of full dedication, the idea is to expand over the world. And you get convinced by this project."
Nadal also added: "You have to draw differences between my academy in Mallorca and this centre. They are two completely different products: there we all have the facilities so that kids spend the entire year there; here it's about holidays, although in the medium or long term our goal is to be able to help Mexican tennis grow."
