ATP Estoril: Stefanos Tsitsipas and Gael Monfils advance into quarters

The top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas has scored the 20th win of the season in Estoril, beating Guido Andreozzi 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 26 minutes. This was their second meeting on the Tour (Stefanos scored an identical win in Sydney) and a solid performance from the Greek who saved three out of four break points to mount the pressure on Guido who lost almost half of the points behind his serve to suffer three breaks from nine chances offered to world no. 10. The youngster won 15 of the first 17 points, racing into a 3-0 lead and creating three break chances in the following game that could have sent him further in front.

In the end, Guido repelled five break points in total to get his name on the scoreboard and serve well in the rest of the set. Stefanos did the same, though, and closed the opener with a hold at 30 in game nine for a 6-3. Andreozzi broke at the beginning of the second set to open up a lead that didn't last for long, with Tsitsipas rattling off four straight games to move in front and march towards the finish line with an excellent hold at 5-4. World no. 3 Gael Monfils took down Reilly Opelka 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 in an hour and 29 minutes, with a strong wind making the conditions impossible to play at some points.

Gael erased nine out of ten break points and despite losing the second set he dominated in the decider to bring the match home in an hour and a half, competing for the first time since Indian Wells. A single break decided the opening two sets and the Frenchman took charge in set number three, winning 26 out of 37 points to serve a bagel and march into the last eight. A former Wimbledon junior champion Alejandro Davidovich Fokina needed only 46 minutes to dismiss world no. 42 Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 6-2 and advance into the first ATP quarter-final.

Serving at 81%, the youngster lost only eight points on serve and he was equally dominant on the return as well, stealing more than 60% of those points and securing six breaks from ten opportunities to leave Chardy far behind. Davidovich Fokina settled into a nice rhythm right from the start, serving well and claiming the opening set with the third break in game seven after a huge forehand mistake from Jeremy. The Spaniard raced into a 5-0 lead in set number two after taking 20 out of 24 points and sealed the deal with a break at 15 at 5-2 for the place in the quarters. World no. 214 Joao Domingues almost defeated Kevin Anderson in Estoril two years ago and he will now play in the first ATP quarter-final after the retirement of John Millman while the Portuguese led 6-3, 2-1.
