ATP Geneva: Dzumhur topples Wawrinka. Delbonis dethrones Fucsovics
World no. 27 and two-time Geneva champion Stan Wawrinka will not have the opportunity to fight for the third title, losing to Damir Dzumhur 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 56 minutes for the third straight defeat. Damir won four points more than Stan and played a little bit better in the decisive moments to advance into the second quarter-final this year, saving eight out of 11 break points and securing four breaks to cross the finish line first. Stan was the better player in the opening set, facing no break points and stealing the Bosnian's serve at 4-3 following a poor drop shot from Damir.
Dzumhur saved two set points on serve in game eight before the Swiss secured the opener with a service winner a few minutes later for a 6-3 and a step closer to the place in the next round. They traded breaks in games four and five in set number two and Dzumhur grabbed another one at 4-3 when Stan netted a forehand, fending off a break point in the next game for a 6-3 and the momentum ahead of the decider. There, Wawrinka opened a 3-0 gap with a break at 15 in game two, barely winning a point on the return in the remaining four Dzumhur's service games and suffering breaks in games five and seven to squander the advantage and push Damir ahead.
Serving for the win at 5-4, the Bosnian sealed the deal with a hold at 15 after a volley winner, happy with the way he performed against the three-time Grand Slam winner. Just like Dzumhur, Federico Delbonis is through to the second quarter-final of the season after a commanding 6-4, 6-2 triumph over the defending champion Marton Fucsovics in an hour and 15 minutes. Federico fended off five out of six break points and took 46% of the return points, enough for four breaks and another good win after the one over Dimitrov in the first round. The Argentinian raced into a 5-1 lead before losing the ground a little bit, drawing Marton back to 5-4 before securing the set with a volley winner in that tenth game.
The second set was just a formality, with Federico dropping only four points on serve and breaking the Hungarian in games three and five, racing towards the finish line and getting there with three winners at 5-2. Albert Ramos-Vinolas took down Joao Sousa 6-0, 6-3 in swift 76 minutes, saving all four break points and taking more than half of the return points to control the scoreboard all the time. The Spaniard needed just over 20 minutes to clinch the opening set and had the upper hand in the second as well, breaking the Portuguese in games five and nine to move into the last eight.
Nicolas Jarry proved to be too strong for Denis Kudla, notching a 6-3, 6-3 victory in 64 minutes, landing 70% of the first serve in and dropping eight points behind the initial shot, never facing a break point. Kudla could have never matched those numbers in his games, getting broke three times to end his run in the second round. Taro Daniel ousted the 3rd seed and one of the favorites Christian Garin 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in two hours, delivering an early break in the decider and keeping it until game ten when he converted the fourth match point to reach the second quarter-final on clay this spring after Marrakech.
