ATP Geneva: Janko Tipsarevic, Hugo Dellien and Nicolas Jarry reach R2

Former world no. 8 Janko Tipsarevic has used his Geneva wild card well, defeating the last year's finalist Peter Gojowczyk 7-5, 7-5 in an hour and 43 minutes. The Serb got broken twice from four chances offered to the German and trailed in both sets before performing a comeback, earning four breaks to prevail in straight sets. Peter saved three break points at 2-2 in the opening set and broke Janko in game eight for a 5-3 lead, only to lose 16 of the last 20 points, handing the set to Janko 7-5. Building a 4-1 advantage in set number two, Gojowczyk lost the ground once again, with Tipsarevic taking six of the last seven games to march over the top and celebrate only the fourth ATP win after the US Open 2017.

Hugo Dellien ousted the 8th seed Andreas Seppi 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in an hour and 51 minutes, winning ten points more than the Italian veteran and delivering better tennis in the crucial moments to reach the second round. Both players created six break chances and the Bolivian converted four, saving four on the other side to cross the finish line first with a late break at 5-4 in the deciding set. Nicolas Jarry was the favorite against the 7th seed Matthew Ebden and delivered a 6-2, 7-6 triumph in swift an hour and 27 minutes, dropping serve only once and overcoming a 4-1 deficit in set number two to bring it home in the tie break for the eighth win in 2019.

Denis Kudla needed two hours and 32 minutes to prevail against Jordan Thompson 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 for the fifth ATP victory on clay. Delivering better numbers on the second serve, Denis fended off eight out of 11 break points and grabbed five breaks, dominating in set number two and making the crucial move with a break at 3-3 in the decider to move into the last 16 with a hold at 15 in game ten. Taro Daniel ousted a qualifier Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in just under two hours, giving serve away five times and managing to erase that deficit with seven breaks on his tally, three in the deciding set which made all the difference.

The 5th seed Radu Albot survived a stern test from Lorenzo Sonego, scoring a 7-6, 7-6 triumph for already the 17th win in 2019. Albot won two points more, trailing 5-3 in the opener and saving a set point in game ten, breaking back on the sixth opportunity. Sonego had another set point at 6-5 in the tie break, only to lose the next three points and hand the opener to the 5th seed. The second set was more fluid, offering no break points or deuces for another tie break that Radu grabbed 7-3 to seal the deal in just under two hours.
