ATP Madrid: Juan Martin Del Potro and Kei Nishikori lose to No. 3 seeds

Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro and Japanese Kei Nishikori have concluded their Madrid Masters doubles campaign.

Third-seeded Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares proved to be too much for del Potro and Nishikori as they claimed straight-set a win 7-6 (5) 6-2 win to advance to the quarter-final.

Murray and Soares blew four break points in the sixth game before they lost their serve in the 11th game.

Del Potro and Nishikori saved four consecutive set points in the tie-break to reduce the deficit to 6-5 but Murray and Soares then converted their fifth set point to claim a tight opener.

Murray and Soares then made a good start to the second set, having broken del Potro and Nishikori in the opening game of the set.

Del Potro and Nishikori saved three break points in the third game but Murray and Soares claimed another break in the fifth game as they served out for the match in the eighth game.

Murray and Soares converted 3-of-11 of their break point chances and saved 2-of-3 of del Potro and Nishikori's break point opportunities in an hour and 17 minutes of play.

Murray and Soares play next against either Wesley Koolhof and Stefanos Tsitsipas or Nikola Mektic and Franko Skugor.
