ATP Madrid: Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic beaten in doubles opener

Australia's Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic have lost their Madrid Masters doubles opener.

No. 8 seeds Henri Kontinen and John Peers proved to be too much for the Australian wildcard duo as they claimed a 6-2 6-4 win.

Kontinen and Peers blew two break points in the opening game but broke the Australians in the fifth and seventh game to easily win the first set.

Kyrgios and Tomic, who fell down by an early second set break, saved a match point on their serve in the ninth game but also blew four break points in the following game as the No. 8 seeds managed to serve out for a win.

Kontinen and Peers won 80 percent of their first serve points, converted 3-of-9 of their break point chances and saved 4-of-4 of Kyrgios and Tomic's break point opportunities.

Meanwhile, Germany's Alexander Zverev and Mischa Zverev were edged out by Robin Haase and Raven Klaasen 7-6 (6) 7-6 (5).

The Zverev brothers blew an early break and two consecutive set points in the tie-break as Haase and Klaasen stole the first set.

As the Zverevs saved a total of three break points in the second set and failed to convert their lone break point, the set went into another tie-break.

The Zverev brothers won four points in a row to recover from a 5-1 tie-break deficit but then lost the following two points as Haase and Klaasen realized their first match point.

Haase and Klaasen converted just 1-of-9 of their break point chances but also saved 4-of-5 of the break point opportunities they faced in just less than an hour and a half of play.
