Cristian Garin: Chile's new tennis hope

What a season it has been for Cristian Garin! The Chilean is playing incredibly, winning two titles (he is the third player to win more than one title in 2019, till now, with Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem) in three finals played. Garin has proven to be in great shape; his tennis applies perfectly on the clay courts, and this is also shown by the results achieved this season (all three finals he has played have been on this surface).

The enthusiasm and the good level of tennis expressed in recent weeks could not be a very important mix for him, for the upcoming tournaments on clay courts. Not only that, his opponents know that an outsider like him can be a loose cannon in all tournaments. A difficult rival to face and that could be a real threat even for top players.

Garin rose to prominence in 2013, when, taking advantage of a wild card, he made his debut on the ATP Tour, at the VTR Open tournament in Viña del Mar where, in the first round he defeated Dusan Lajovic, becoming the fifth under-16 player to have won an ATP match since 2000, after Rafael Nadal, Richard Gasquet, Ryan Harrison and Bernard Tomic.

This year he played and lost the first round of the Australian Open against David Goffin, he reached the second round in Buenos Aires and in Rio de Janeiro (where he lost against Marco Cecchinato and Felix Auger-Aliassime). Then he reached his first two ATP Tour finals; in Sao Paulo (defeat against Guido Pella) and Houston (his first career title, won against Casper Ruud). After reaching the third round in Barcelona, he won his second career title in Budapest, defeating Matteo Berrettini in the final.

Chile has found a great tennis player, who can guarantee good successes for the future (he is only 22 years old), especially on clay courts, where his tennis adapts very well, unlike the other playing surfaces, where he is still yet to make a mark.
