Daniil Medvedev: I play less PlayStation, train in more professional way
In an interview to Figaro, Daniil Medvedev commented on his origins. Medvedev was born in Moscow but he moved to France. "I had to leave Russia to improve. At 18 years, my parents decided that I had to train in Cannes because my sister lived there at the time. Gilles (Cervera, his coach) was part of the facility created by Jean-Rene Lisnard (Elite Tennis Center). And in 2017, I decided to exclusively work with Gilles," said the 22-year-old.
He feels comfortable in Monte Carlo, where he lives: "In the big Russian cities, everything is open 24 hours. On Sunday, you can go shopping alone. In France, that does not happen. I like coming back to Russia. It's really my home. My second home. But the work was not very intense there. When I came to France, I was exhausted at the end of the training session. I did nothing when I came back home. I have been much more of a professional for a year and a half. I train more, I do not attend parties all nights and I play PlayStation less during tournaments."
The world no. 14 reached the Monte Carlo Masters semifinals defeating Novak Djokovic and the Barcelona Open final losing to Dominic Thiem. "I prefer clay but as a junior, I got good results on clay. Two years ago and last year it did not work because I always dealt with minor injuries," he admitted. This year it was definitely different.
Medvedev lost in the first round of the French Open to Pierre-Hugues Herbert on Monday in five sets.
