Garin's coach: "I see him doing very well, with a great future coming soon"
Cristian Garin. Behind the name that has turned many heads lately—especially Shapovalov’s, Zverev’s, and Schwartzman's—stands a soon-to-be 23-years-old who has thrived on the professional circuit for more than seven years before making his big boom in late 2018.
If the Chilean has a clean record of 8/8 three-set matches won during this season and is becoming a definitive opponent to fear for the ATP’s top, it has not always been the case. Before teaming up with his present coach, the Argentinian Andres Schneiter, Garin was, in fact, a bundle of potential who struggled a little on the physical health and mental sides.
However, “Gago” has always seemed a player who gives the most on the court. Young, powerful, and humble, the World No. 33 knows how to conquer the crowd.
I remember having seen him playing for the first time during his participation to the 2015 Santo Domingo Challenger. The public, thrilled by his game, cheered for him until he bowed in quarter-finals to Damir Dzumhur, the man who would lift the Dominican trophy this edition. Then, three years later, Garin came back to secure himself the Caribbean title, and the crowd’s love was still there, but most important of all, his game and mental had solidified.
Meeting Schneiter during Wimbledon 2018 has proved to be a turning point in the Chilean’s career. Out of the ATP top 300 in 2018 mid-January, Garin has taken over three challengers and two 250 in the last eight months, breaking into the top 50 at surprising speed.
“He really has improved his level,” Schneiter told Ubitennis. “He closed 2018 winning three challengers and reaching the finals in Como. So he started 2019 in another way. The victory against Austria in Davis Cup was a further confidence boost. [..] I see him doing very well, with a great future that is coming soon.”
“Cristian started to be more consistent, solid, more organized on the court,” the Argentinian coach added. “We also try whenever we can to improve his aggressive, and to make him play closer to the baseline. Still, in the defensive phase, in running and fighting, Cristian does well.”
Garin, who’s in the lead of the ATP Stats Under Pressure LEADERBOARD with great scores—100% win rate in deciding sets, 43.4% Break Points Converted, 66.7% Tie-Breaks Won and 65.3% Break Points Saved—is absent from the Roma Master 1000 draw, but is in the entry list for the upcoming French Open. Needless to say, the public is eager to see how far the Chilean's game will bring him.
