Roger Federer usually makes huge surprises, can do well on clay - Grin

In an exclusive interview to Tennis World USA, Geneva Open Tournament Director Thierry Grin commented on Roger Federer's chances in the clay season. Grin expects the 20-time Grand Slam winner to do well. "Over his career he has been able to make huge surprises and things nobody expected him to do. When he cameback from the knee surgery he won the Australian Open in 2017. He has an ideal talent to switch surfaces pretty well and why not. He could make some upsets, then to say that he can be the winner is a long way and long road to go but he can be part of the favorites anyway because he has the talent to be able to adapt his game to clay and I think he will be very competitive," said Grin.

Asked if the Laver Cup, co-founded by Federer that will take place in Geneva later this year may help the tournament promotion, Grin replied: "The Laver Cup will be in September so it's a separate event, we are connected to it, we are two different events in two different parts of the year. It's good for the city of Geneva first of all, but I do not think that will help us."

Grin also assured the Geneva Open will be held at least until 2022. "Last year, the agreement with the title sponsor has been renewed for three more years, which makes us very fortunate because not all the events have a title sponsor which guarantees us to hold the tournament. We now have a $4 million budget."
