Stan Wawrinka to play St. Petersburg, not Laver Cup

Surprisingly, Stan Wawrinka will not play the Laver Cup that is set to take place from 20 to 22 September 2019 in Geneva. The three-time Grand Slam winner is committed to competing in St. Petersburg Open, that takes place in the same week as the men's tennis event founded by Roger Federer and his agent Tony Godsick. In February Federer had said he would have loved to bring Wawrinka, but he had not guaranteed Stan's appearance. At the moment Federer and Rafael Nadal are the only two players confirmed for the Team Europe and Laver Cup overall.

The other players committed to St. Petersburg are the defending champion and world No. 5 Dominic Thiem, who defeated Martin Klizan in the last year's final, Fabio Fognini, the Russian Karen Khachanov and Daniil Medvedev. In 2018 Fognini won the doubles title alongside his compatriot Matteo Berrettini.

Wawrinka achieved his best result in St. Petersburg in 2016 losing the final to Alexander Zverev. Last year Wawrinka lost to Klizan in the semifinals, 4-6 6-3 7-5 after more than two hours. The Lausanne native will have a busy schedule in the next months as on grass he plays in Stuttgart, Queen's and Wimbledon.

For the first time in his career, Rafael will get to May titleless during the season. On Friday Nadal will attend the official presentation of the Madrid Open with Garbine Muguruza and the Tournament Director Feliciano Lopez. Roger Federer will arrive in Madrid on Friday, May 3, while Novak Djokovic is expected to come a bit later as he is training in Marbella, Spain while enjoying time with family.
