Two top 15 players join Federer, Zverev, Wawrinka in 2019 Basel
As every year, the Swiss Indoors of Basel has built a great field on. The event will take place from 21 to 27 October 2019 and two more players have been added to the field. Stefanos Tsitsipas and Marin Cilic will join Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka and Alexander Zverev in the ATP 500 event. That means four of the best 11 players in the world will play there. Federer will open his campaign on Monday, while Tsitsipas will play on Tuesday. Last year the Greek lost to Daniil Medvedev in a three-set quarter-final match. The Russian would then lose to Federer in the semis. Cilic was instead beaten by the eventual finalist Marius Copil in the second round. The Medjugorje native won the 2016 title defeating Kei Nishikori in the championship clash.
In the same week as Basel, the Vienna Open will feature Nick Kyrgios, Kevin Anderson, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov and Dominic Thiem.
The Gerry Weber Open field has been set. The German event will take place from 15 to 23 June 2019 and Roger Federer will headline the tournament. The 37-year-old will seek his tenth title in Halle. Last year he lost to Borna Coric in a three-set final. "The player's field this year is a bit too strong for my situation, I would like to have it easier", said Federer through a video message. Alexander Zverev (ATP 4), Dominic Thiem (ATP 5), Kei Nishikori (ATP 7) and Karen Khachanow (ATP 13) will be some of the main favourites. Zverev has not delivered his best tennis this year but the Tournament Director Ralf Weber feels confident. "I hope he can be as good as last year", he said.
An exhibition match featuring legends will be held. The former Wimbledon winner Goran Ivanisevic, Mansour Bahrami, Thomas Muster and Florian Mayer will play. Weber also said he is confident about the chances to get a new title sponsor as the deal with Gerry Weber expires this year
