United States Postal Service Issues Stamp in Honour of Little Mo

Tennis - The United States Postal Service (USPS) has issued a Forever stamp in honour of the legendary tennis champion Maureen Connolly Brinker (1934–1969) at Southern Methodist University,  according to The Gilmer Mirror. Better known as "Little Mo', Connolly became the first woman to win all four major tournaments in a calendar year (1953) and won nine Grand Slam singles titles from 1951 to 1954 during her short career. She is one of only five players in the history of the sport to have won all the four Slams in the same year. She was also the World No. 1 player and the AP Woman Athlete of the Year for three years in a row. She was also inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1968.

On the occasion, Janice Walker, vice president, U.S. Postal Service Corporate Communications, commented, "The history-making tennis career of Maureen Connolly Brinker, combined with the gracious spirit she exhibited after her career abruptly ended, is emblematic of the type of character and courage that we strive to spotlight on our stamps. Being selected for this honour means that you have made an extraordinary and enduring contribution to American society, history, culture or the environment.”

Connolly's daughter Cindy Brinker Simmons and American Top 10 player John Isner were among those present at the event, along with Katherine Chabot Willette, a Top 10 player in the early 1960s, Dr R. Gerald Turner, President, Southern Methodist University; and radio/television host Scott Murray, who anchored the event.
