Wawrinka: 'Federer is the GOAT. I would love to play 2020 Tokyo with him'
On an Instagram Q&A, Stan Wawrinka was asked if he plans to play the men's doubles with Roger Federer in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. The 34-year-old replied: "I would love that", also adding that Roger Federer is the greatest player ever for him. Wawrinka had three idols: Alex Corretja, Patrick Rafter and Pete Sampras, and he would love to play mixed doubles with Serena Williams.
Analyzing his loss to Damir Dzumhur in Geneva, Wawrinka added: "A good start, but it finished bad, it's the kind of games I am losing now, I am doing okay but at some point, I am not doing enough and the match goes on. I have to change. I have to put all the pieces of the puzzle together, that's how I play my best tennis and that's how I already won Grand Slams. I hope to manage to do it soon."
Asked if he is worried by this loss, Wawrinka replied: "Not at all. It can happen. It's not funny, that's clear, and summarizes all those months. It's those little wins that do not make me get confidence. I exactly know what happened and why I lost. What frustrates me more is that I cannot play in front of this crowd again because that's the only reason why I came to Geneva this year."
Meanwhile, the former player Arnaud Di Pasquale commented on the history of French tennis: "We had good players. Sebastian Grosjean who was the No. 4, Escudé, Pioline, Santoro, Golmard ... we were a lot of players on the top 100. Arnaud Clement was tenth ranked, Australian Open final. He could have created something, but apparently not. We are real friends. We are always happy to see each other. We spent our lives together, we were eating together, we were training together. We were not Friends but rivals."
Asked if he still plays tennis now, Di Pasquale replied: "Not much. Maybe ten times a year. But I start enjoying. After interrupting my career, I was happy not to play during the first years. Now thanks to Arnaud Clement, who is a crazy sportsman, I play a bit. He needs a training mate. I forgot that was a great sport. You still understand why you enjoy playing tennis."
