We have money to bring Federer, we will try again in 2020 - Geneva chief

The Geneva Open tried to bring Roger Federer this year to the tournament that will take place from 19 to 25 May just before the French Open. This year the Swiss decided to make his comeback on clay, but he just included Madrid and French Open on his schedule. Earlier this year in February, Federer said he will not play in Geneva this year but he may do it in 2020. In an exclusive interview to Tennis World USA, the Tournament Director Thierry Grin commented about the topic. "For sure, he will not play this year because he officially said it but he has not really closed any door for the future. But there are no discussions with him for next year yet. This is something we will do. It's a future potential opportunity", said Grin. Asked if they have the financial resources to pay Federer an appearance fee, he replied: "Of course if we are talking him it's because we have financial resources and having someone like him in the tournament brings more interest for the event overall and so in sponsorships."

Who could get a wild card invitation this year? "Geneva will give a wild card invitation to Feliciano Lopez and they hope to give some other to top players. "In the previous years we granted one to Kei Nishikori, Stan Wawrinka, and that's an advantage for Geneva because some players need some more matches prior to the French Open and they make a call just the week before."
