Wrist injury sidelines junior no. 3 Clara Burel from Roland Garros

An 18-year-old Clara Burel is a current junior no. 3 and a former no. 1 from last year, also the biggest French hopes among the youngsters on the WTA list. The Rennes native had the opportunity to make a Grand Slam debut in Melbourne at the age of 17 in January, receiving a wild card from the French federation after stellar results in 2018. Clara made a name for herself in 2017 after playing in the semi-final of the Yucatan Cup and the final of Eddie Herr, raising her game to a higher level in the previous season to become one of the best juniors in the world.

Burel finished runner-up in Melbourne, New York and at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, earning enough points to secure the year-end no. 1 honor after lifting the trophy at the ITF Junior Masters. Dianne Parry defeated Burel in the final of Mundial Juvenil Yucatan, with another big crown slipping away from Clara's hands in 2018, still collecting more points than Xiyu Wang and Cori Gauff to become the first French year-end junior no. 1 since Kristina Mladenovic in 2009. Clara is currently ranked 488th on the WTA ranking list, playing in the first pro final in September last year in Clermont-Ferrand and getting that opportunity to make WTA debut in Melbourne four months ago, losing to Carla Suarez Navarro despite strong resistance in the opening set.

Things were not that bright for a teenager since then, struggling with a wrist injury and winning just one main draw match in January. As that wasn't enough, Clara will have to skip the second Grand Slam of the season at home in Paris with ongoing injury and she also parted ways with the coach Karine Quentrec, seeking for the new names in the coaching staff and the opportunity to play again as soon as she leaves that nasty injury behind her.
