Jamie Murray: Andy won’t play for ever, then what’s behind him?
Andy Murray’s career was over some time back but the former Wimbledon won the doubles title at Queen’s recently and is set to feature at his home slam as well.
His brother – Jamie Murray spoke about Andy’s struggles with injury and how people are taking that news. “Andy won’t play forever, then what’s behind him?” said the 33-year-old Jamie. “There isn’t much and you’ll lose more interest in the game if you don’t have a star at the top. You need someone competing with Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.”
Jamie further said that he does not see another Andy Murray any time soon. “Unfortunately it is still an expensive sport to get involved in,” added Jamie. “You have to pay for courts, rackets and balls. I know the LTA wants to open up the game to the masses. It’s important we capitalise on the interest Andy has generated. It’s a golden opportunity. We won’t get a chance like this again.”
“Tennis Scotland also needs to do more. Andy transcends tennis in this country. You won’t get another Andy for God knows how long. We want a kid in the east end of Glasgow who’s watching us play on television and wants to try tennis to have the opportunity. But he doesn’t. That’s frustrating for us. You lose people that way.”
He further added that he doesn’t want to face Murray at Wimbledon, feeling it will be weird. “It’s weird to be across the net from each other. I hope we don’t play each other at Wimbledon. But we could play in the first round. It could be the final.”
“It’s a strange contrast of emotions because ultimately the goal is to win. But at the same time, you also want your brother to win and you have to beat him.”
