Novak Djokovic's fitness trainer reveals the three French Open favorites
In an interview, Novak Djokovic's fitness trainer Gebhard Gritsch commented on the French Open favorites. Like in 2016, the Serb won Madrid Open and reached the Rome Open final. That year he won the French Open and he aims to do that again. "Now the competition is stronger", warned Gritsch. "It will be very close, for Rafael Nadal too. Now he (Nadal) is okay but I am not that sure he will win seven matches. Novak is doing better, but in the Grand Slam tournaments you need the best shape only in the end. Every match becomes tougher, the last one more. That was seen with Dominic Thiem last year. The best guys comeback in the final."
Can Thiem win the title this year? "Yeah, he can win this tournament. The circle is not big, for me they are Nadal, Djokovic and Thiem."
On his plans, Gritsch added: "I will help him in the French Open and Wimbledon, but after many years I would like to do somethings different."
On Thiem and his coach Gunter Bresnik splitting each other, Gritsch added: "It's a shame. I am convinced that Bresnik has the know-how needed and he knows how Dominic works. Thiem should have not split with him, Gunter and his knowledge, you cannot replace them. He has much experience and he knows every detail about Thiem. He cares about details which can make a difference. A new coach like Nicolas Massu can motivate. But he cannot know the crucial details", he concluded.
