Yoshihito Nishioka: One of my ultimate goals is to show exciting tennis
Rising Japanese star Yoshihito Nishioka says one of his goals is to play an exciting style of tennis as the French Open crowd was chanting his name during the clash against Juan Martin del Potro.
Nishioka, 23, left it all on the court against del Potro but even that wasn't enough as the eighth-seeded Argentinian escaped with a 5-7 6-4 6-2 6-7 (5) 6-2 win to progress to the French Open third round.
The Japanese recovered from an early break down to win the first set and threatened to do the same in the second set but del Potro managed to level the match at one set apiece.
The Argentinian then easily won the third set and was bidding to steal the fourth set but Nishioka -- who blew an early fourth-set break -- kept his focus to win the tie-break and force a decider.
Nishioka had no strength to make a big comeback and send del Potro packing as the eight seed broke the Japanese twice to win the fifth set and avoid a shock exit.
"One of my ultimate goals is to show exciting tennis, I'm aiming for the tennis that's fun to watch. If that (the crowd chanting his name) means I played in such way, I think I've improved," Nishioka said, per the Jiji Press.
