I am not working as a Novak Djokovic photographer anymore, says Ray Giubilo
In an interview to Tennis Circus, photographer Ray Giubilo revealed he is not co-operating with Novak Djokovic anymore. The Italian said: "Around a year ago I was contacted by the Djokovic's agent who was looking for a photographer who could follow all the Djokovic's matches in the Grand Slams and Masters 1000, plus the ATP Finals. I accepted to do it until the end of the year in certain conditions and then at the end of the year, we would have discussed for the following year. But we have not found an economical agreement for 2019 and so I decided to stop the relationship after this year's Australian Open. I was too busy and I have more important clients who I cannot put aside because of just one player."
On how the photography evolved in tennis, Giubilo added: "I do not think that taking photos is more difficult than the past. Through today's technology, I instead think it's easier. In 1995 I had a 3,600 image budget for a two-week tournament while today I take more than 20,000. In the beginning, I could not use camera speed."
Asked what kind of photo he prefers, Giubilo replied: "I do not prefer one above the other, it's just about instinct and moment. After 30 years, I know all the best places where to take photos from."
On how his career started, he concluded: "I had my first tournament ever in the 1989 Australian Open. For me everything was new and I was excited. I started covering all the tournaments and the Davis Cup matches in Australia as a photographer and journalist."
