It's hard not to pick Novak Djokovic as Wimbledon favorite, says McEnroe
In an interview to GQ Magazine, the seven-time Grand Slam winner John McEnroe was asked who are his Wimbledon favourites and who could create an upset. The American former player said: "Yeah, it's hard not to pick the obvious guys but I think the chasing pack are getting closer, so maybe someone like [Stefanos] Tsitsipas could be in with a shot. He’s got the goods to go all the way. But it’s hard not to pick Novak [Djokovic] at the moment... that would be the obvious choice."
Recalling his first appearance at Wimbledon dated back to 1977 when he was 18 years old, McEnroe added: "Well, it was a bit of a blur. I was sent over to play the juniors and initially, I didn't even know I was going to play in the qualifiers. But I had enough points to get in and one thing led to another and I won three matches. I was lucky in that I had a someone who was looking out for me, giving me advice on the players I was going up against. Then a couple of the seeds I would have played earlier in the tournament lost and I found myself in the second week, in the quarters and then it hit me... there are only eight guys left. And I remember thinking: “I had better win this quarterfinal match.” Because if I had lost in the quarters, I could still have played the juniors in the second week and I really didn't want to lose in the quarters and then lose in the juniors that same week. So that gave me a little extra incentive to make the main locker room. So by winning and making the semifinal, my life was completely different after that."
