John Isner ready to continue successful year after three-month layoff
American tennis star John Isner has quickly found his game and rhythm after being sidelined for three months.
Seeking matches and form, the American took a wildcard into Newport after an early Wimbledon exit.
The 34-year-old's decision to play Newport paid off as he captured a record fourth title at the tournament.
Isner made a good start to the season as he made three semifinals and a Masters 1000 final before suffering a stress fracture in his foot.
The American hobbled during his Miami Masters final loss suffered to Swiss Roger Federer in April.
Isner, a 2018 Wimbledon semifinalist, returned to action at The Championships.
The American was clearly far away from his best form as his Wimbledon campaign ended with a shock second round loss suffered to Mikhail Kukushkin.
Isner wasn't particularly convincing in Newport as well but still found a way to win it all at a familiar place and one of his favorite stops on the tour.
The world No. 14 won his first three Newport matches in three sets before handing a straight-set defeat to Alexander Bublik in the final.
A happy and satisfied Isner now heads to Atlanta, where he is a record five-time champion.
No. 1 seed Isner will be hoping to win a third consecutive Atlanta title and add more success to his 2019 campaign.
