John McEnroe: Konta has a great chance of winning Wimbledon
American tennis legend John McEnroe believes Johanna Konta can become the first female British winner at a Grand Slam for 42 years at this year’s Wimbledon.
In an interview with Standard Sport, McEnroe said, At the French Open, she showed she’d added layers to her game in terms of what she’s trying to do. The fact she did that surprised me, but I liked that she was trying to do something different.”
“There’s the belief there and, having made the finals in Rome and the semis at the French, there will be the confidence going into Wimbledon. In tennis, you never know what’s possible. If you’d had asked me a year ago if Ash Barty would win this year’s French Open, I would have told you that wasn’t possible.”
He further added, “Right now, Jo has a great chance of getting to the Final and even winning it. It’s wide open. And there’s every chance of it being a first-time Slam winner this year. We’ve had nine different [female] Grand Slam winners in the last 10, so why not Jo?”
He also admitted that Serena Williams still remains the one to beat. But McEnroe added: “It’s always hard to pick anyone besides Serena, even when she doesn’t necessarily look on form. It’s hard to picture her not being the favourite. She’s got this amazing will to win, much like Roger and Rafa.
