Lindsay Davenport: Serena Williams loves playing on grass
Former Wimbledon Champion Lindsay Davenport recently said that Serena Williams will be a tough player to beat at the All England Club this year.
“She loves playing on grass,” the former world No 1 said on Sky Sports. “She’s learnt how to play so well on it for the years. It rewards her game. If she serves well, returns well, the big question is her knee. It’s been bugging her since she came back from having a baby last year.”
She further added, “She hasn’t been able to play a lot of matches in a row. It swells up, it starts to bother her. Everyone is concerned about that.”
“She took a little time off after the French to be 100% here, but I think this is her surface. We saw her last year get to the final. I felt Serena last year was playing at 50 or 60%, she still wasn’t 100% after having her baby. We’ll have to see how she comes out this time.”
“She plays a player playing in her second Grand Slam, her first Wimbledon, I think it’s an easy road for Serena at the beginning but we’ll see as the tournament goes on.”
Billie Jean King recently spoke about Williams too, saying, “And at her age, it's much tougher, you've got to be smarter, you've got to get your nutrition right, you have to work harder. But it's worth it if you want it. But if she doesn't want it, it's fine."
