Wimbledon fun July 1: Wawrinka, Shapovalov, Murray, more
One could think there is already enough said with match reports during the first round of a Grand Slam. Yet, Wimbledon and its draw of 128 are the perfect setting for lots of funny things to unroll. Crack-up moments, surprising facts, curious anecdotes, here a recollection of the best July 1st (and maybe June 30th) episodes at the 2019 Championships.
Yesterday, Stan Wawrinka pointed out the facts. Perhaps because he doesn’t want to be mistaken for Roger Federer again -- or maybe simply because the occasion was too good not to take it -- the Swiss let his humour run free in one of his most recent Instagram captions. To describe a picture of him pointing far forward, the 34-year-old wrote, “Roger fans, it’s this way.”
On the same day, there was a speedy back-to-back knock-down & rescue from Sakkatack. As photographed by Tennis Life, Donna Vekic was apparently knocked down at the net while training the day before the competition's start. But no worries, because Maria Sakkari flew to the other side of the court, and picked up her practice partner. In the end, they shared a hug.
Today, Judy Murray shared some love as well, slaying her chef skills. Jamie and Andy’s Mum gave a quick class on her Twitter page to all tennis fans that want to indulge their sweet tooth and watch as many hours of tennis per day as possible. Thanks to her extra-fast, extra-good-looking cheesecake recipe, Judy may be saving more than one home-spectators from spending precious minutes in the kitchen.
On Canada Day, Denis Shapovalov opened the party. The young Canadian star will make his debut in the main draw on Tuesday, but this did not prevent him from having some fun beforehand. The 20-year-old had the chance to meet singer Redfoo and even wore matching glasses in an immortalized shot for his Instagram account. “We party rocking in London with Redfoo,” the NextGen wrote to accompany his post. In his Instagram stories, he shared a short video of the “Party Rock” star -- a notable tennis fan -- cheering for him during a practice session.
Finally, we witnessed some indecision: football or tennis? Looks like Diego Schwartzman and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had some doubts there. While the French used head-hits as part of his warm-up, it’s not too clear during what part of his practice the Argentinian decided to feet-jungle with a tennis ball. He demonstrated a great capacity of control, but when the time came to shoot the ball in the bin, he got a bit frustrated at his lack of aim.
