Casper Ruud improved a lot by training at Rafa Nadal Academy - Andersen
In an interview, 46-year-old tennis coach Jan Frode Andersen praised Casper Ruud's progress. Andersen said: "Casper had a very special opportunity and I think it's very good for him. In Norvegia everyone says how good he is. In Spain, he was told that he is good, but that he can be better. The Nadal Academy looked closely at Casper. He has a big potential, he is nice to see on TV. He is very lucky to have this chance."
Christian Ruud, Casper's son, agrees that his son improved by going to Spain. "It helps being surrounded by people who were good players and who were close to Nadal. They show a lot of interest and they believe that Casper can be good. It gives him confidence and he learned by training with Nadal. Casper improved a bit on everything. His return game improved even if he may a bit too defensive. There are many things he can still do better."
Ruud will face Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round on Tuesday. He is the bottom half of the men's singles draw. He lost in the first round of the Australian Open qualifiers in January. Then, at the French Open, he lost in the third round to Roger Federer. At Wimbledon, he lost in the first round to John Isner. Ruud could play Isner again, in the second round of the US Open. The American, seeded 14th, will play Spain's Guillermo Garcia Lopez in the first round.
