Federer, Nadal, Djokovic are much more consistent than Next Gen - Martinez
In an interview to Europa Press the former world No. 2 Conchita Martinez commented on the differences between Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic and the younger guys. The Spaniard believes the Big Three still have the highest chances to triumph in New York. "The replacement is happening slowly and the older guys are still winning titles, in the final rounds and especially in the Grand Slams", said Martinez. "Rafa is coming from very good feelings in Montreal, which is very good. Djokovic is a player that has a mental strength that is difficult to deal with in the Grand Slams, especially playing at the best of five sets. And with Roger, hat off to him. At his age he was about to win Wimbledon. The three still have a lot to say. It's clear the next generation is very good. But Nadal, Federer and Djokovic are much more consistent. In order to beat them, you need to win big matches especially in the Grand Slams at five sets. On the women's side, there is more balance."
Martinez commented on the US Open women's draw. She said: "We will see how Osaka deals with pressure of defending the title and also with this injury that forced her to retire in Cincinnati, in full match. Then you have other strong players who can do well. Then Karolina Pliskova has always chances. She is a player who is doing very well, who is being very consistent during the season. She is having very good results on all surfaces. She is coming from playing the quarter-finals in Toronto and Cincinnati. She plays very good matches, taking her opponents away from the court, but a Grand Slam is different. You have to go match by match. The women's draw is always a bit more open, because there are very good players, with a lot of balance on Tour. Hopefully Karolina does well. But those tournaments are long, you need to be very focused over two weeks. I would not indicate a favorite. You have to put Serena Williams is in the mix, she is still reaching finals at her age; despite she struggled a bit in the last ones, she may be nervous for the record."
