Federer's loss to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon was unexpected, says Gasquet

In an interview, Richard Gasquet spoke about his second-round win over Kei Nishikori in Montreal. The Frenchman said: "It has been a long time since I last played at this level, especially since when I re-started. After losing the first set, it was complicated. I was very happy about winning, it was really a nice match. Kei Nishikori is a great player. It was important to win. Especially when you lose 7-6 in the third, it's always tough. Rain delays helped me more than him. He started making many unforced errors."

Gasquet has been going through a tough season. "I try to come back to my best. When you stop competing for a while, it's difficult to be at a very high level again. You need to be doing well. I ran well, I moved well."

On how it feels to win tight matches, he added: "It's clear that I (have won) less than Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, unfortunately. But it happens you lose too. Even Roger lost to Novak Djokovic in Wimbledon when you do not expect it at all. The mind is important, but the body needs to be there too, in order to fight against those players."

Asked if he was surprised to win a three-hour match, Gasquet concluded: "I had already played long matches on clay in July, in tough conditions. Even if I did not have great results, I knew I was doing better despite a very bad Wimbledon. You only need to play and win matches to feel it. Training is important but nothing replaces the competition. I gained confidence against Benoit Paire. Nishikori had not played since Wimbledon, I knew there was something wrong."
