Gregoire Barrere reacts to breaking into top-100
Rising French star Gregoire Barrere, 25, says breaking into the top-100 is a good sign that he is doing the things right.
The French qualifier claimed a maiden US Open win in his debut at the tournament after edging out Great Britain's Cameron Norrie 7-6 (4) 6-4 4-6 6-7 (5) 7-6 (2).
Barrere, ranked at No. 109 in the world, entered the match knowing that a win would ensure he reaches the top-100 when the ATP list gets updated after the US Open.
The 25-year-old has made a notable ranking jump since the beginning of the 2018 season.
The Frenchman entered the 2018 season ranked below the top-600, while he started this year ranked at No. 163 in the world.
"It feels good, yes. I would have liked that to have come a little bit earlier but it is how it is. It shows that I'm doing the things right. I told myself that if I do the things well, normally the top 100 should arrive," Barrere told L'Equipe after beating Norrie.
Barrere will fight against former world No. 7 David Goffin for a place in the US Open third round.
