US Open: Coco Gauff wins contest against fellow teen Anastasia Potapova
Some interesting results came about in the top half of the women’s singles matches at the US Open on Tuesday. World no. 1 Naomi Osaka and the world no. 4 Simona Halep won their matches in three sets. Most other seeds also came through, while there were a couple of upsets.
Here is a quick look at the last few matches that were lined up for the day’s schedule:
In the last match of the day on Arthur Ashe, 11th seed Sloane Stephens was ousted by qualifier Anna Kalinskaya. The Russian won 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 24 minutes.
The 2017 US Open champion was troubled with her shot-making and peppered 33 unforced errors in the course of the match. Kalinskaya had just the 18 unforced errors in comparison. Stephens was also unable to do much on her second serves, winning merely 45% points off them to the Russian’s 59%. In the final game of the second set with Kalinskaya serving for the match, Stephens was able to force the game to deuce but an error off her forehand allowed the 21-year-old to set up a match point which she then converted with a winner off her backhand.
Kalinskaya will face wild card Kristie Ahn in the second round. Ahn defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-5, 6-2. This was Ahn’s first win in the main draw of a Major. This was also the first time Ahn had played in the main draw of the US Open in 11 years, since losing to Dinara Safina in the first round in 2008.
In the battle of teenagers, Coco Gauff beat Anastasia Potapova 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in 121 minutes. Although she hit 11 double faults (Potapova had four), Gauff won put in 63% first serves and won 73% points off them. On the other side of the net, Potapova managed to win 56% points off her first serves, of which she put in 53%. The American won 89 points for the match to the Russian’s 81.
The 15-year-old wild card will play Hungarian qualifier Timea Babos in the second round. Babos reached the second round after her opponent, the 28th seed Carla Suarez Navarro retired mid-match after losing the first set 6-2.
In the Belarusian derby, ninth-seeded Aryna Sabalenka got the better of Victoria Azarenka. Sabalenka dropped the first set but won the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 13 minutes. Sabalenka went for broke in the match, firing 42 winners and 43 unforced errors. Her Fed Cup colleague had just 17 winners, and 27 unforced errors. The world no. 13 closed out the match with 105 points to her opponent’s 97.
The 21-year-old next faces Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva. Putintseva defeated Madison Brengle 6-3, 6-3 in their first-round match.
Nineteenth seed Caroline Wozniacki also needed three sets to defeat China’s Yafan Wang in the first round. The Dane got the job done in two hours and nine minutes 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. Wozniacki won 70% points off her first serves to Wang’s 67%. Both players won 48% points off their second serves.
Of the two players, Wang had more break point chances but Wozniacki did well to save most of them. The former world no. 1 saved five of the eight break points she faced. At the same time, she converted three of the five breakpoints that came her way on Wang’s serve.
Wozniacki will play Danielle Collins in the round-of-64. Collins defeated Polona Hercog 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in their first-round match.
