ATP Zhuhai: Adrian Mannarino, Cameron Norrie and Albert Ramos-Vinolas win
The opening day of the competition at the inaugural ATP 250 Zhuhai event saw four singles matches and a joy for the home fans. Adrian Mannarino prevailed against Ze Zhang 7-6, 7-5, losing serve once and earning two breaks to cross the finish line first. Zhang kicked off the match with a break but couldn't stay in front for too long, suffering a break in game four and matching Mannarino's pace after that to reach a tie break where he was two points away from the finish line at 5-5 and 6-6. Still, Adrian remained focused and grabbed the last two points to take it 8-6, gathering the momentum ahead of set number two where nothing could have separated them until game 11 when Mannarino delivered a crucial break that carried him over the finish line and into the second round.
Cameron Norrie had an easy day at the office, toppling Peter Gojowczyk 6-1, 6-4 in 67 minutes to notch the 19th victory of the season. The Briton lost nine points on serve and never experienced break points, taking 46% of the return points and breaking Peter three times from six opportunities to control the scoreboard all the time. Norrie needed just over 20 minutes to secure the opener with breaks in games two and four, serving well in set number two as well and stealing the rival's serve at 2-2 to forge the advantage that he brought home with a hold at 15 in game ten. The 8th seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas made a convincing start, toppling Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2, 6-1 in an hour and 14 minutes after a dominant display on both serve and return.
The Spaniard claimed 11 out of last 12 games from 2-1 down, controlling the pace and taking 55% of the return points for five breaks that pushed him into the last 16. Di Wu celebrated the first ATP win since Shanghai 2017, beating a qualifier Tatsuma Ito 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in two hours and 21 minutes. Both players had their chances on the return, with almost 30 break chances up for grabs, with seven breaks for Ito and eight for Wu who found himself 5-3 down in the decider after getting broken four times in a row. With no room for errors, Di grabbed 16 of the last 20 points to claim the final four games and cross the finish line first.
