Dan Evans praises Alexander Bublik after losing to Kazakh at DC
Great Britain's Dan Evans showed his class after losing to rising Kazakh star Alexander Bublik at the inaugural Davis Cup Finals in Madrid.
Evans, ranked at No. 42 in the world, had a chance to secure a victory for his side over Kazakhstan but 57th-ranked Bublik came from a set down to beat the Briton 5-7 6-4 6-1 and force a decisive rubber.
A day earlier, Evans also had a chance to secure a win for Great Britain over Netherlands but Dutch Robin Haase came from a set down and a break down to beat the Briton and force a decisive rubber.
"I’ve obviously had two tough days. It’s just difficult,’ Evans said, per Metro UK. "He’s obviously a tough guy to play. And I actually thought I didn’t do a lot wrong, I just thought he played pretty good."
British Davis Cup Team Captain Leon Smith decided to rest Andy Murray against Kazakhstan but Kyle Edmund stepped up and saw off Mikhail Kukushkin in the opening rubber of the tie.
"At the minute, the No. 1 guy is the weak, the weak one at the minute. We’ve got a great team, you know. We can move it around. Like, Andy didn’t play today and then Kyle come in and did a great job getting us 1-0 up," Evans added.
Luckily for Evans, his loss against Bublik didn't come to haunt him as Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski beat Bublik and Kukushkin in the doubles rubber to give Great Britain a win over Kazakhstan and a quarterfinal spot in Madrid.
"And yeah, obviously there’s a few different combinations in doubles we can play. I’m really happy with how everyone’s been playing and it’s great to see everyone fighting so hard on the court," Evans claimed.
