Carina Witthoft Unsure if She Will Return to the Circuit

German tennis player Carina Witthöft, who peaked in the world rankings at No. 48 in January 2018, says she is not yet sure of she will make a comeback to the tennis circuit. In an interview with the German Tennis Magazin, Witthoft says she is feeling much better these days but is yet unsure if she will return to the circuit full time. "Physically, I still have some problems. Unfortunately, I am not yet at one hundred percent. But I would say it's all on the right track. Mentally I am also very well. The break is definitely good for me. It pinches in the left foot because I pulled a torn ligament while I was jogging over a tree root. The band was completely through. I can train, but it's not like before."

The 24-year-old Witthoft says the sport still takes up most of her day. "The sport still takes up most of the day. I do something for myself every day. I notice immediately when I put the racket out of my hands for four days, that I feel like playing. That's why I play almost every day. Otherwise, I train a lot to keep myself fit. I am still under treatment to keep my body in good condition. Otherwise, I have a lot of time for friends and family, which is really nice. I also have a lot of talks about what options there are in the future."

Speaking about her return to the courts, Witthoft says, "That's difficult to answer because I do not want to make promises. The fact is that it is decided neither in one direction nor the other. It's definitely not like I say I'll never play professional tournaments again. But it's not like I'm ready to work towards a next tournament. I take the time I need."

Witthoft says if she did not return to the tour, she would probably take up a career in tennis coaching or fashion. "Either I stand on the tennis court at tournaments or I do something different, in the direction of fashion or tennis academy. I'll have time to start a family later."

Witthoft won 1 WTA singles titles prior to her break and 11 singles and 1 doubles title on the ITF circuit. Her last tournament on the circuit was the Australian Open in January this year.
