Caroline Wozniacki: 'Disease has been one of the bigger hurdles in my career'

In an interview to Ekstra Bladet Caroline Wozniacki reflected on her decision to retire from the professional tour. The Dane said: "I've always felt that I wanted to stop when I felt the time was right. It's always been important for me to stop when I still felt I could compete against the best. And I really feel that I could compete at the top for a few more years. The sport has given me so much I wanted to stop when when I still felt it was fun and not when it was shit."

On her chronic rheumatoid arthritis: "Obviously, I had to find out how much pressure I could put on my body - the new me - and it's obviously been one of the bigger hurdles in my career."

Wozniacki believes she could not have done either way: "The most important thing is that I'm clear-headed about it, and that I made the decision myself. Unfortunately, I've seen so many who've been forced to stop before they wanted to. It's hard for me to really imagine how it till be to hit the last ball, but, of course, it will be strange to wake up the next day, with the pressure gone, but it'll probably feel like a liberation too. Other exciting things will happen. I'm looking forward to doing things I haven't been able to do before, like going on a skiing holiday, or do a lot of things with my family and friends."

On possibly triumphing in Melbourne once again, Wozniacki concluded: "For sure. I'm training hard, and it would be cool to win Australia again. Think if I could WIN my last ball. That would be really cool, haha."
