Juan Martin del Potro to use protected ranking for Australian Open

Argentine tennis star Juan Martin del Potro will use his protected ranking to play the Australian Open, per Michal Samulski. 

The 31-year-old hasn't played since picking up a major knee injury at the Queen's Club in June. 

Del Potro slipped on the grass of Queen's but managed to finish his first round match against Denis Shapovalov and claim the win. 

An MRI scan revealed a knee injury and the Argentine underwent a season-ending knee surgery. 

Del Potro, a former world No. 3, has plummeted to No. 123 in the world following his six-month absence from the Tour. 

The 31-year-old didn't make the main draw cut for the Australian Open so he will have to use a protected ranking to enter the event. 

Del Potro, who debuted at Melbourne Park in 2007, is set to make his 10th appearance at the event. 

The Argentine made the quarterfinal at Melbourne Park on two occasions -- in 2009 and 2012. 

Both of those del Potro's campaigns came to an end after losses suffered to former world No. 1 Roger Federer.
