Julien Benneteau Says He Has No Plans of Becoming Davis Cup Captain
France's Fed Cup captain Julien Benneteau says he has no plans of becoming the Davis Cup captain of the French men's team. Benneteau's French team carried out a dramatic 3-2 win over Australia last month in the Fed Cup final and many have now wondered if he should take over the role of Davis Cup captain, currently held by Sebastian Grosjean.
According to L'Equipe, Benneteau says, "If I think of becoming captain of the Davis Cup? This is really not news. For now, I am very good with girls. When I applied to be captain of the Fed Cup, it was because I thought they deserved interest in them. They showed me that I was right. I have no reason to look for something else."
Speaking about the French Fed Cup team, Benneteau says, "Individually, I thank them, since they made me live incredible emotions. Emotions that are as high and as strong as I have known in my greatest victories as a player, and that I did not think I could relive, anyway so quickly. It has been a hell of a year. In the end, they were simply the best, the strongest. I am very very proud of them."
France was knocked out of the group stage of the newly formatted Davis Cup competition this year, having gone 1-1 in the group stage - they beat Japan and lost to Serbia. In the new format of the Davis Cup, the top eight teams from the six groups move into the quarter-finals stage.
