Simona Halep had a tiring year, but winning Wimbledon made it ‘heavenly’
Simona Halep admitted that 2019 was a rough year due to her physical problems, but she considers it to be the best ever because she managed to beat Serena Williams and, consequently, win Wimbledon.
“It was not a physically constant year. I was a little tired after 6 years in the top 5, top 10. It was hard to manage this tiredness. That’s why I took a lot of days off. I wasn’t at a high level at all the tournaments I participated in.
But I put it (this year) on the first place because I won Wimbledon. I have never imagined that I can win this tournament because grass is a difficult surface, we don’t have grass courts in our country and we couldn’t train, learn the game.
But in the 6-7 years I had the chance of having very good coaches and get to feel the game on grass, to know what I have to do. Every match was hard, but the final was heavenly. Showing that I can play exceptional tennis on the court touched my soul.”, Simona said for Digi Sport.
Halep defeated Serena Williams with a crushing 6/2, 6/2, bagging her third win over the American legend and, also, her second Grand Slam of her career.
The Wimbledon success has also helped the Romanian become the most loved WTA player in 2019. She won the WTA Fan Favorite award for the third time in a row and you can't blame the fans for their vote.
