Corrado Barrazzutti Hopes Jannik Sinner Will Play Davis Cup for Italy Soon
Corrado Barazzutti, the captain of the Italian Davis Cup team, says he hopes that rising 18-year-old Italian Jannik Sinner will be on the Davis Cup team for Italy as soon as possible.
Speaking to Spaziotennis.com, Barazzutti says, "For his age, Jannik Sinner is our strongest young man and I hope to see him as soon as possible in the Davis Cup so that he can make an important contribution to achieve a great result."
Speaking about the current state of Italian tennis, Barazzutti says, "For the new year, I hope that Italian tennis will achieve great results. There are Fognini, Berrettini, Sinner, Sonego and many other guys who are playing well. This is why I hope that important results will arrive both individually and as a team, because in the Davis Cup we can achieve prestigious goals considering that we have some of the strongest players in the world."
In this year's Davis Cup competition, Italy was beaten by both Canada and the United States in the group stage of the Davis Cup, the first time that the tournament was played in a condensed format at one location.
Barazzutti, himself, is a former Davis Cup winner in 1976 and has played 32 ties over 13 years for Italy. He made his debut in the competition as a 17-year-old – the year before he turned professional. He also reached the semi-finals of two Grand Slams in his career – the US Open in 1977 and the French Open in 1978.
