Rafael Nadal Finishes Third in AIPS Poll for Best Male Athlete of 2019
Tennis - World No. 1 tennis star Rafael Nadal has finished third in the vote for Best Male Athlete of 2019 by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), which has a panel of 331 journalists from 102 countries.
The Argentine footballer Lionel Messi was voted Best Male Athlete in the poll while long-distance runner Eliud Kipchoge came in second place ahead of third-placed Nadal, who won the French Open and US Open titles in 2019 and helped his country Spain to win the Davis Cup title for the sixth time this year. Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas, who won the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals in November, finished 19th in the poll.
The vote for Best Female Athlete went out to American gymnast Simone Biles for the 2nd year in a row. World No. 1 tennis star Ash Barty, who won the French Open in June, finished seventh in the poll while US Open champion Bianca Andreescu finished ninth in the poll.
