Roger Federer 'very rarely watches the big games' when he is not playing
In an interview to the Tribune de Geneve, Roger Federer was asked which match he considers to be the best of the 2010-2020 decade. His explanation was a tad surprising but very honest.
“The thing is, I very rarely watch the big games when I am not [playing the tournament anymore], obviously,” he admitted. “Because when I lose, I stop watching. But I watch a lot of matches during tournaments until I lose. Just because after that, I do something else, I go with my children. For me it’s very difficult to say: was it the huge game between Rafa [Nadal] and Novak [Djokovic], or was there another huge game? I, for example, have loved Stan’s [Wawrinka] match against Tsitsipas in Roland Garros this year. Was it the match of the year? That’s possible. But was it the match of the decade? If it’s not a final, it’s difficult to say. I think the match of the decade should be a final.”
Federer then reflected: which gigantic final could be nominated? He enumerated four: the six-hour-long battle between Djokovic and Nadal for the Australian Open title in 2012 (which he hasn’t watched, though); his 2017 Australian Open victory against Nadal; his 2019 Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic; and Wawrinka’s claim for the French Open title against Djokovic in 2015.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion did not give a final answer, however. So which of those is the one?
