Sam Stosur Wants a WTA Cup Event Alongside the ATP Cup
Former US Open champion Sam Stosur says that relegating the women's matches at this week's WTA Brisbane International to the outside courts for the first few days of the event due to a clash with the inaugural ATP Cup is a 'bit rough'. Stosur also suggests that a women's WTA Cup be held alongside the ATP Cup.
The WTA event starts on Monday in Brisbane but all the women's matches will be scheduled on the outside courts for the first three days of the tournament, including the those of top stars such as World No. 1 and local favorite Ash Barty, World No. 2 Karolina Pliskova and defending Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka.
Stosur says, "It's a bit rough that there are no women's matches on the center court until Thursday. So in that way, it's not great. It does change the complexion a little bit. And I know a few fans that I've talked to or come up to me are a little bit confused about what's actually going on."
Stosur said she had talked to Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley about hosting a WTA Cup event a few months ago. "I talked to (Tennis Australia CEO) Craig (Tiley) about that at Wimbledon last year and I know that he's very much on board to try and make a WTA (Cup) event. And six, seven years ago maybe, WTA was trying to do the same thing but couldn't fit it in the week. But I think everyone likes playing in a team. We all love playing for our country. Hopman Cup's always been very successful with the men and women so I think if you are going to do it, I think it would be pretty cool to have a combined event. I think that would be really exciting if all parties can get together and make that happen."
