Tennys Sandgren: Roger Federer picked up his level in key moments

World No. 100 Tennys Sandgren said No. 3 seed Roger Federer was simply too good in the key moments of the match after suffering a heartbreaking Australian Open quarterfinal loss.

Sandgren, who was aiming to reach his maiden Grand Slam semifinal, fell just short as the Swiss won 6-3 2-6 2-6 7-6 (8) 6-3 in just less than three and a half hours of play.

The American missed out on a major chance to stun record 20-time Grand Slam Federer as he blew a total of seven match points throughout the fourth set.

The Swiss saved three match points on his serve in the 10th game of the fourth set, before saving four more in the tie-break en route to stealing the set and ultimately claiming a comeback win.

"It seemed his level picked up when his back was right against the wall... He just wouldn't give my anything and credit to him for that," Sandgren told reporters after the match.

It was the first-ever meeting between Federer and Sandgren.
