Virginia Ruzici: Too Much Tennis is Being Played on Hard Courts

Former French Open champion Virginia Ruzici says that too much tennis is being played on hard courts which makes it very difficult for the players today and their bodies.

According to Sport Ro, the 1978 French Open champion says, "Tennis is played too much on hard courts, even indoors and it is very difficult for the body. Tennis has become extremely physical, played a lot on hard courts, the most difficult surface for the body. Personally, if I were somewhere in the organizations that run this sport I would put in a few more tournaments on the clay and even on the grass. The hard courts dominate, we have 50-60 percent and 40 percent divided between grass and clay. It is difficult to play so much on the cement and this leads to frequent injuries. Personally, I would have preferred Australia to stay on the grass. At the US Open, you cannot change this because their favorite surface is hard courts."

Speaking about the new format of the Davis Cup, Ruzici says, "I belong to the generation which liked the true Davis Cup and regret the new format. I'm not yet convinced about this event being held in addition to the Laver Cup by Federer and the new ATP Cup. For me, the Davis Cup has lost some of its importance and reputation."

The 64-year-old Ruzici won 11 singles titles in her career, besides the 1978 French Open. She also won the French Open doubles event that year with Mima Jausovec, the woman she beat in the singles final and reached the mixed doubles final as well that year. She remained in the World's Top 20 from 1977 to 1983 and was a French Open finalist once again in 1980.
