Carlos Moya on Roger Federer's retirement: "It is the law of life"
Carlos Moya was No.1 in the world for 2 weeks in March 1999 following the only final of the year, in Indian Wells, without even reaching a quarter-final in a Grand Slam tournament that year. On 17 November 2010 he announced his retirement from tennis, caused by age and a persistent right foot problem (osteoarthritis), to devote himself to his gym in Palma de Mallorca, his family and other businesses related to the sport.
In a long interview in Las Provincias, the current Rafael Nadal's coach spoke about various tennis-related topics. Moya also talked about Roger Federer's future: “Federer made semifinals in Australia and if he had won the first set against Djokovic, anything could have happened. It is the law of life, as tennis lovers you have to enjoy them.”
On Nadal, Moya added: “[I] do not [know]. For me, Nadal remains for a while. He is playing well and [without] injury. When you combine all of that, he will remain for a while. It was a pity. In that tournament he [was] penalised [for] a bad game, the first against Zverev. Then he had two excellent ones that didn't work to qualify. It was positive to know that he is still to win that competition.”
Nadal began his 2020 season by playing at the inaugural 2020 ATP Cup and helped Spain reach the final where they lost to Serbia, with Nadal losing to Djokovic in straight sets. Nadal then played at the 2020 Australian Open and won his first three matches in straight sets against Hugo Dellien, Federico Delbonis and Pablo Carreño Busta. In the fourth round, he defeated Nick Kyrgios in four sets and reached the quarterfinals where he lost to Dominic Thiem in four sets.
