Matteo Berrettini to also skip Acapulco
Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini has picked up yet another tournament withdrawal as the 23-year-old won't be playing at the Mexico Open in Acapulco next week.
Berrettini, ranked on a career-high ranking of No. 8 in the world, skipped the inaugural ATP Cup at the beginning of the season and also pulled out of this week's Rio Open in Rio de Janeiro.
The Italian played two matches at the Kooyong exhibition leading up to the Australian Open but couldn't do much at Melbourne Park since he wasn't at 100 percent.
Berrettini, who made his maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open last year, suffered a surprise second round defeat at the Australian Open as Tennys Sandgren beat the Italian in five sets.
The 23-year-old Italian, who has no previous appearances in Acapulco, will be replaced by in-form Briton Kyle Edmund, who is set to return to the Mexico Open for the first time since 2017.
Back in 2017, world No. 45 Edmund appeared in Acapulco for the first time but didn't have an impressive debut as he was beaten in the first round by American Sam Querrey.
