Karen Khachanov works out at home with his son

Back in September last year, Karen Khachanov and his wife welcomed a baby boy David, with the Russian becoming one of the latest dads on the ATP Tour at the age of 23. Karen has spent the last couple of weeks with his family in Moscow, staying isolated and working on his physical strength like all the other players after a coronavirus breakout that has put tennis season on hold at least until July. Karen used the opportunity to share a video of himself working out with David, carrying the little boy and doing exercises with his son in arms. Following the first Masters 1000 title in Paris 2018, Khachanov had high goals ahead of 2019 season, starting the action from just outside the top-10. Standing on the verge of the elite group, Karen finally broke there in June but couldn't survive until the end of the year after a mediocre 30-29 score, failing to reach the desired form or produce consistent results.

The Russian added the Swede Fredrik Rosengren to his coaching staff ahead of 2020 season, with not too many chances for working together, especially not since the beginning of March. Entering the top-30 in 2017, Karen bounced back even stronger in 2018 after winning 46 matches and three ATP titles that moved him closer to the place in the elite top-10. The youngster won the title in Marseille and lost in the semi-final of Toronto to Rafael Nadal, challenging world no. 1 at the US Open as well in one of the best matches of the season that lasted almost four and a half hours. After some poor results, Karen claimed the title in Moscow and gained momentum ahead of Paris Masters where he defeated four top-10 rivals (saved a match point against John Isner at the beginning of the streak) to claim the first Masters 1000 crown, prevailing against Novak Djokovic in the final.

In the first half of 2019, Khachanov reached the quarter-final in Indian Wells and Roland Garros, suffering some early exits and failing to improve the ranking position. Grass brought him nothing good and his game looked much better in Montreal, advancing into the semi-final for the best result of the year. Karen was the semi-finalist in Beijing and the quarter-finalist in Moscow and Vienna, managing to stay in the year-end top-20 but closing the season with three straight singles defeats at the Davis Cup Finals. After four victories at the beginning of the ATP Cup and 2020 season, Karen lost the ground again, losing in the third round of the Australian Open to Nick Kyrgios ain an epic clash and the quarter-final in Dubai to Novak Djokovic, his last match so far.
